Wet But Not Wild: Naming Genetically Engineered Salmon
Something smells fishy. The FDA has just approved the farming of Atlantic salmon injected with a growth hormone from Chinook salmon and a gene from ocean pout (an eel-like fish). These new salmon grow to maturity in half the time, but don’t shout “Yay for Omega-3s!” just yet. Fishmongers haven’t started selling them—word from the deep is that Poseidon is ticked, and advocacy groups have sued to challenge the FDA ruling. The company who played god, AquaBounty Technologies, has christened them “AquaAdvantage Salmon,” and though they have an upstream battle in the courts, they stand a good chance of winning. PopNamers, we need to find a more seaworthy name for these salmon before they land on our plates! Have at it.
