Unmarital Bliss: Renaming the “Romantic Partner”

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 1.32.10 PMHere’s another oddity of the English language: we lack a term for an unmarried person in a long-term romantic relationship. And yeah, that omission is because society, until recently, ignored unmarried partnerships. “Significant other” is too staid and long (and abbreviated it implies “SO?”); “life partner” sounds stuffy; and “boyfriend/girlfriend” can sound trivial. We think it’s about time we had a graceful term for a mate minus the ring.  What would you call a serious romantic partner?
