Current Name Game
Near & dear but not so clear: A new name for a new relationship
In a recent NY Times article, Paula Carter described the difficulty of having no name for her relationship with her significant other’s children. Though she was not their mother, or stepmother (since she wasn’t married to the kids’ father), she cared for the kids for years. She’s not alone. The Census Bureau issued a special report on stepchildren in 2014. Researchers found that it was difficult to calculate the number of stepparents because respondents who were living with partners but were not married did not know how to define their relationship to their partner’s children.
If it doesn’t have a name, it’s like it doesn’t exist. Carter suggested Near Mother as a possible term for this bond. PopNamers, what do you think? We need a name to honor this type of parental relationship.
