Kids These Days: Naming the Next Generation
Every 15-20 years, journalists, social critics, and marketers deem the young people coming of age different enough from the rest of us to warrant identifying them with a new generational label. But the way that generation’s name is decided is hardly a precise science—suggestions are bandied about in the media until one or two stick: like Gen Y and Millennials, Baby Boomers and the Me Generation. Well, some are saying that the new crop of hyper-diverse, hyper-connected (and perhaps hyper-cynical) youngsters born from the late 90s through the 2000s are now ripe for labeling. Generational names that have already been floated in the press are the iGen, the Plurals, and the Selfies, but we can do better, right, PopNamers? Here’s your chance to make history by naming this new generation.
