Give it a Leg Up: Renaming the Anterolateral Ligament
Last week, two surgeons in Belgium found a new ligament in the human knee. Dr. Stephen Claes and Dr. Johann Bellemans, with the help of 41 cadaver knees, confirmed that the small but mighty ligament links the front of the thighbone to the shin. The ligament’s discovery will greatly help complicated knee joint-repair surgeries, and while the doctors have been deservedly applauded for their discovery, they blew the opportunity of a lifetime in calling it the Anterolateral Ligament. What more fun name would you assign to the last frontier of the human body?
