Fiscal cliff or bunny slope?
We’re sure Ben Bernanke had no idea he would cause such a kerfuffle when he coined the phrase “fiscal cliff” to describe the combo of large spending cuts and tax increases, slated for January 1, 2013. The phrase has assumed a larger-than-life presence, but how much of it is hype? Are we really plunging into a fiscal fire of doom? Some say the so-called crisis is more of a “gradual fiscal slope” or “fiscal obstacle course,” but none of these has the visceral punch of a cliff. What would you rename this presumed effect?
