Facebook addiction
No doubt you’ve heard the term “Facecrack” before –-a not-so-subtle reference to social media’s addictive quality. Perhaps there’s some fact to this notion of Facebook Addiction Disorder, as posed by a University of Chicago study, claiming that Facebook and Twitter are harder to quit than nicotine or booze. Facebook’s 900 million users (72% of all Americans have an account) spend an average of 20 minutes a day on the site, and 48% of 18-34-year-olds check it as soon as they wake up. So whether Facebook addiction is fact or fiction, what would you call this compulsion to be continuously plugged into the social network?
