The Scoop on Poop: Renaming Fecal Transplants
Nowadays you can get any kind of transplant: heart, face, Achilles tendon. Heck, you can even get a fecal transplant. Wait, what? You read that right. Officially, it’s called a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). The procedure involves inserting a tiny, diluted sample of stool from the donor into the colon of a recipient. It’s been effective in treating deadly GI diseases, but for obvious reasons, isn’t widely accepted yet by the medical community. A new name for the procedure would certainly help it catch on.
